Perceptual Adjustment to Highly Compressed and Rate Changes Speech: Effects of Talker
نویسنده
چکیده
This study investigated the perceptual adjustments that occur when listeners recognize highly compressed speech. In Experiment 1, adjustment was examined as a function of the amount of exposure to compressed speech by use of 2 different speakers and compression rates. The results demonstrated that adjustment takes place over a number of sentences, depending on the compression rate. Lower compression rates required less experience before furl adjustment occurred. In Experiment 2, the impact of an abrupt change in talker characteristics was investigated; in Experiment 3, the impact of an abrupt change in compression rate was studied. The results of these 2 experiments indicated that sudden changes in talker characteristics or compression rate had tittle impact on the adjustment process. The findings are discussed with respect to the level of speech processing at which such adjustment might occur.

متن کاملPerceptual normalization for speaking rate III: Effects of the rate of one voice on perception of another
Individuals vary their speaking rate, and listeners use the speaking rate of precursor sentences to adjust for these changes (Kidd, 1989). Most of the research on this adjustment process has focused on situations in which there was only a single stream of speech over which such perceptual adjustment could occur. Yet listeners are often faced with environments in which multiple people are speaki...
متن کاملPerceptual adaptation to non-native speech.
This study investigated talker-dependent and talker-independent perceptual adaptation to foreign-accent English. Experiment 1 investigated talker-dependent adaptation by comparing native English listeners' recognition accuracy for Chinese-accented English across single and multiple talker presentation conditions. Results showed that the native listeners adapted to the foreign-accented speech ov...
متن کاملDifferences in talker recognition by preschoolers and adults.
Talker variability in speech influences language processing from infancy through adulthood and is inextricably embedded in the very cues that identify speech sounds. Yet little is known about developmental changes in the processing of talker information. On one account, children have not yet learned to separate speech sound variability from talker-varying cues in speech, making them more sensit...
متن کاملVarying acoustic-phonemic ambiguity reveals that talker normalization is obligatory in speech processing.
The nondeterministic relationship between speech acoustics and abstract phonemic representations imposes a challenge for listeners to maintain perceptual constancy despite the highly variable acoustic realization of speech. Talker normalization facilitates speech processing by reducing the degrees of freedom for mapping between encountered speech and phonemic representations. While this process...
